The foundation of Panerai has its roots back in 1860 when Giovanni Panerai opened a family business in Florence. Later he established a strong relation with some of the most famous Swiss watch brands. His business inherited Leon Francesco, who was the son of Giovanni.

The production of Radimir began in 1938. After passing all the tests the luminous watch was supplied to the Italian Navy. During the Second World War the company introduced its first chronograph. The Mare Nostrum was created exclusively for deck officers. In the end the watch remained only a prototype.

An engineer by the name of Dino Zei took over the Panerai Family business after the death of Giuseppe in 1972. That is when the company was transformed into Officine Panerai S.R.L. the supply of various complicated instruments continued.

At the end of the 20th century the company designed a limited number of watches exclusively for the civilians. These series include: Luminor, Luminor Marina and Mare Nostrum. A watch named Slytech was also created during this period. This timepiece was designed after the request of Sylvester Stallone whose nickname, by the way, is Sly.
